Conversation 9: Local Icon: Brian Klopper

with Simon Anderson

SUN 16 OCT | 2:00PM – 2.45PM

Architect Brian Klopper is synonymous with Fremantle and for many was the first architect they knew by name. His distinctive houses, with their rustic palette of recycled brick, steel and timber, are models for sustainable design and demonstrate a continuous commitment to architectural innovation. Klopper sadly passed away in 2021. Simon Anderson will revisit Klopper’s works and discuss its relevance today.

This event is part of the Fremantle Design Week Conversations Series. Tickets are available for individual sessions, a whole day or the whole weekend.

Simon Anderson is Winthrop Professor of Architecture and Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Visual Arts at the University of Western Australia. Simon has taught and practised architecture at The University of Western Australia (UWA) since 1989. Across a distinguished career, Simon has won multiple awards and citations for excellence in teaching and design, including residential, multi-residential, institutional and industrial buildings. He is a writer, curator and professional journal editor and advisor, and has been an elected councillor of the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) for a decade. He is frequently a design award juror, and competition brief writer and judge. In 2012 he co-curated with Andrew Murray an exhibition of Klopper’s work, Brian Klopper Architectural Projects at the University of Western Australia.
