Please join us to open Monash University XYX Lab’s exhibition ‘HyperSext City’ and launch Fremantle Design Week.

We’re excited that ‘HyperSext City’ exhibition designers, XYX Lab’s Co-Director Associate Professor Gene Bawden and Isabella Webb, will be present to introduce the exhibition and engage in conversation.

The bar will be open and DJ Kester Sappho will be on the decks – we’re looking forward to kicking off WA’s first Design Week with a bang!

The PS Art Space will be the Fremantle Design Week hub so keep your eyes on the program and make sure you book in for the events that will be taking place across the week.

Fremantle Design Week is presented by DesignFreo, a platform celebrating design and designers in the port city of Fremantle / Walyalup and beyond.

We’re a not-for-profit founded by a group of local designers, makers and doers. We love design, we love our town and we care about its future. We’re interested in how design can bring joy to the everyday and also in how design can tackle the bigger issues facing our communities and planet.

Monash University XYX Lab is a team of experienced design researchers exploring gender-sensitive design practices and theory. Our work operates at the intersection of gender, identity, urban space and advocacy. Through our research, we make tangible the experiences of under-represented communities in urban space and planning. XYX Lab is grounded in feminist and queer theory and activated through real-world projects. Equal parts qualitative and quantitative research, we collect and analyse data and experiences to generate deeper understanding and support our design projects.

Our approach is inclusive of all gender and sexual identities. Building equity into urban life requires long-term vision and a strategic – often radical – approach to the design process. Rather than offering quick-fix design solutions, our aim is to offer insights and create moments that contribute toward a larger movement for change.
